Still the best live band going
It was so great to see the boys come to San Jose! Pete was in fine form, laughing and joking with the audience, reminiscing about a show they did in England in the 70s in Hull where they realized the people were so poor that Roger suggested giving the money back. Now that he's in Silicon Valley, he joked they could keep all the money.
They kicked off with the Tommy set, which sounded great, with Pete shredding on guitar. The orchestra was very good.
The first orchestra set was followed by a switch to just the band, playing a lively set including You Better You Bet, Seeker, Naked Eye, an outstanding Tricky Day, a solid WFGA, and a somewhat lackluster Behind Blue Eyes. Roger's voice was strong for most of the show, with occasional faltering moments.
The Quadrophenia set with the orchestra was outstanding, but some audience members started sitting down during The Real Me, which was disappointing. The Rock segment was a favorite, with Pete and Simon really having fun. Loren's moving intro to LROM was soulful and fantastic. They closed with Baba, starting a bit underwhelming but quickly picking up, especially when Katie Jacoby tore it up on the violin.
All in all, a great night with the band taking a bow, reminiscent of a scene from "Kids Are All Right." Probably by now, all of you know the setlist, as nothing changed from the last few shows. I wish they would switch out eminence front and ball and chain for something else, especially from WHO. Pete joked about the money situation in the past show and Roger's voice had some struggles due to smoke exposure in Portland and Seattle. I sometimes think they fear playing new songs because the audience may not know them, but how many know Ball and Chain?
